Description

If you are interested in both traditional and pop culture of Japan, this private tour will be the most suitable one for you! For pop culture spots, you will visit Harajuku and Omotesando district and Shibuya town. Harajuku is well known for teen's fashion and the town is full of small boutiques with Japanese teens donning their unique styles influenced by cosplay, gothic, lolita, hip hop, punk, and other subcultures. Being adjacent to Harajuku, Omotesando has a different atmosphere with high fashion brand shops and eye-catching designed buildings by prominent architectures. Shibuya is known as the center of youth culture. You can also experience the famous zebra crossing there! For traditional cultural spots, you will be in Meiji-jingu shrine. Meiji-jingu is Tokyo's largest Shinto shrine in a large forest area. At Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building's observation deck, you can enjoy a panoramic view of this never-ending citiscape.

Meiji Jingu

Meiji Jingu Shrine

Tokyo's largest Shinto shrine established in 1920 to enshrine Meiji Emperor and the Empress Shoken. Meiji Emperor is the first Emperor of modernized Japan after the Meiji Restoration in 1868. The shine is famous for the large wooden Tori Gate. Many wedding ceremonies are held at the shrine and visitors may be able to come across a traditional wedding procession led by a Shinto priest.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observatory

Looming gigantic like an over-sized Notre-Dame Cathedral and standing 243.4m tall in the heart of Shinjuku, Tokyo Metropolitan Government building is an icon of this ever-evolving city. The building was designed by the world-renowned post-modern architect Kenzo Tange and completed in 1991. The twin tower hoses two identical observation deck at 202 m above the ground and you can enjoy a panoramic view of Tokyo. On a clear day, you can even capture the view of Mt. Fuji at its background.

Remarks

  • This is a walking tour. Although subways and trains are used most of the time, you'll be walking a few miles/kilometres during the tour. Please dress casually and wear shoes comfortable for walking.
  • Every tour is arranged per each request regardless of the number of guest in a group up to 6 and there won't be any mixed group.

Our family of four, two adults and two children (ages 9 and 13) had a wonderful time on our 6 hour West Tokyo tour with Ryoko. From our first inquiry with the company, the attention to customer service was fantastic. Ryoko met us at our private apartment and helped us navigate our way through Tokyo. We were able to visit the busy shopping districts we might not have ventured to on our own, eat lunch at an amazing Japanese restaurant (Maison), and she assisted us in purchasing our Shinkansen tickets for our trip the next day to Kyoto. When we walked the outside perimeter of the Imperial Palace, Ryoko had an app on her Ipad that showed what the grounds would have looked like during Feudal times. Our children really enjoyed that! As Ryoko continued to pull pictures, maps, tissues, hand wipes, and any other things we needed throughout the day out of her handbag, our son commented in amazement that Ryoko?s bag was like the one Mary Poppins carried.
